Cambridge-based outdoor app company, ViewRanger, is being featured on Apple’s website to showcase the outdoor capabilities of Apple Watch 2.

Introduced for the first time during Apple’s keynote in September, ViewRanger for Apple Watch delivers offline maps, detailed route guides, and live trip stats to the wrist of outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. The app, which pinpoints your exact location using GPS and tracks your movements on zoomable maps, works with all versions of Apple Watch when paired with an iPhone, and works as a standalone Watch app when following a route using the built-in GPS on Apple Watch Series 2.

ViewRanger completely redesigned its watch app to take advantage of the improved capabilities of Apple Watch Series 2. It uses the GPS within the watch to pinpoint the wearer’s exact location, allowing them to navigate with the watch independently of the iPhone. Users get a discreet tap on the wrist when it's time to make a turn, or when they reach interesting points. The ViewRanger app for Apple Watch Series 2 works with Apple Health, so personal activity rings fill up as users hike and walk.

Key ViewRanger for Apple Watch features

  • Follow routes, record tracks, or navigate in map-only mode
  • See your GPS location on zoomable maps, including Ordnance Survey maps, IGN maps, and any other map available in ViewRanger
  • Stream any map type from your iPhone to Apple Watch
  • View live stats including altitude, distance travelled, elevation gain, and trip time
  • Choose from hundreds of thousands of downloadable route guides, or create and follow your own routes
  • Store up to three routes and related offline maps on your Apple Watch
  • Follow routes curated by top publishers with turn-by-turn directions, photographs, and interesting facts
  • Get notified with a tap on the wrist as you reach key points on your route
  • Fill the Move, Exercise and Stand rings in the Activity app as you follow routes
  • Follow driving directions to your route’s starting point via Apple Maps
  • Explore offline without mobile or data connection

“With a quick glance at the watch, ViewRanger users can see their GPS location on detailed maps, access route descriptions, and learn interesting facts about the landscape around them,” said Craig Wareham, ViewRanger co-founder and CEO.

In combination with the cutting-edge technology of the new Apple Watch Series 2, ViewRanger delivers hands-free route navigation directly to outdoor enthusiasts without the need to pull out their iPhones. Plus, the new watch will instantly link into ViewRanger’s time-tested mapping technology and active outdoor community.
