Principal Electronics Engineer Ref 1000

We are looking for an experienced and talented electronics engineer with a desire to continue learning and to take on new challenges. You will be expected to provide technical leadership, mentoring and reviewing on a wide variety of leading edge multidisciplinary developments where the electronics take centre stage.

Main purpose of the job

As a Principal Electronics Engineer you will be working on a variety of interesting and complex electronic developments for our clients. You will be working as a lead engineer alongside a world class team from the same and other disciplines. This position will allow you to be involved in many aspects of the development cycle, from concept generation through to transfer to manufacture. You will also have the opportunity to support and influence business creation in areas in which you are passionate and to be involved in project management.

Type of work undertaken by division/group

Cambridge Consultants undertakes over 300 cutting edge technology, design and consulting projects every year. The IDEC Division focusses on four markets:

  • Industrial - sensors, robotics and logistics systems for manufacturing and retail clients
  • Defence - secure end-to-end systems for government clients covering sensing, communications, tracking & location, and data analysis
  • Energy - sensing & communications systems for downhole and subsea oil & gas applications and smart metering systems
  • Consumer - smart dispensing systems and connected sensor systems for personal care, food & beverage and sports & fitness brands

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to manufacture, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, innovation and R&D processes.

The Electronic Product Design group delivers interesting and complex electronic developments across the broad range of projects undertaken by the IDEC Division. We have a focus on projects where designing challenging electronics enables us to exceed our clients’ expectations.

Some of the areas we are currently involved with are:

  • RF and communication systems
  • High volume consumer products
  • High value sensing systems
  • Industrial robotics systems
  • Industrial power systems

Specific responsibilities

As a Principal Electronics Engineer your responsibilities will include:

  • Design and development of printed circuit board assemblies
  • Technical leadership on multidisciplinary projects where the electronics take centre stage
  • Interacting with clients to understand requirements
  • Producing architectures for electronic systems
  • Communicating technical details effectively with clients
  • Design for manufacture (DfM) reviews in collaboration with internal/external manufacturers
  • Working closely with business developers to develop technical proposals and with project managers to deliver technical solutions
  • Providing mentoring and technical reviewing for junior engineers

Minimum requirements

To meet the requirements of this role you will:

  • Have an excellent degree in electronic engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Have a detailed understanding of the fundamentals of electronics
  • Have an impressive track record of producing electronic designs
  • Be passionate about electronics
  • Have a desire to continue learning and to take on new challenges
  • Have excellent communication skills

Specific expertise in any of the following areas would be advantageous;

  • RF and communications
  • Switched mode power supplies
  • Low noise analogue design
  • Low power
  • Control system design and implementation
  • Power electronics
  • Transfer to manufacture/new product introduction (NPI)
